About Alys

Hi! I’m Alys, a pattern maker who's worked for brands like Alexander McQueen, steventai and Teija.

I teach pattern making and fitting in a fun and easy way to give you the freedom to design your own clothes exactly how you want.

I hold a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design from Nottingham Trent University - renowned for giving its students a strong skill base.

My love for pattern making developed here, combining my enjoyment of experimenting and problem-solving with art, sewing and creativity.

There’s nothing better than the buzz of bringing an idea to life and getting lost in the making. So here's to exploring more, playing more and trusting in the beauty of the process. To transform the ideas inside our heads into pieces we LOVE to wear.

The story of Unpicked studio

The rumblings of Unpicked Studio started in Feb 2020, after I moved to Australia from the UK.

Picture this: I didn’t know anyone in Sydney, I discovered my job as a pattern maker didn’t exist (most of the work was offshored), and suddenly, the borders shut.

But, what I did have was an excitement for pattern making, a love of sharing my knowledge with others and a need for community, and that’s exactly what we built together.

In the form of a joyous studio, with beautiful pink floors and plywood walls.. the space was filled with sewing socials and workshops for new and experienced sewists to come together and level up their sewing game!

In 2023, as our community became global, the Sydney studio hit pause, and the first online courses went live with the key mission still at heart - to demystify pattern making - making it fun and easy to learn so simply put; you can create a wardrobe you feel good in.

I believe the key ingredients to becoming a great pattern maker are learning the core skills, mixed with gaining confidence to follow your curiosity so you can play and experiment for yourself.

Each course is designed with this in mind, ready to unlock your creativity.

I’m now based in Brighton, UK but our community is worldwide. 🎉
